Small exposition this time, as I'm already late >.>

When writing, the main idea is to get the reader to see what you're writing on the page. Because of this, we use words and devices that invoke detailed images in the minds of the readers. Good writers can make you literally see what's going on, in your mind's eye.

However, we (as writers in general) get so caught up in painting pictures that we tend to forget about the other senses: sound, touch, taste, and smell. Invoking these others senses can be just as satisfying to the reader as painting Sight can be; some of my favorite passages in books have been words that let me almost feel the same texture the heroine felt ("as her hand ghosted over the rough, frayed hilt of an old dagger, loose ends getting caught between her fingers..." for example). And if you can manage a scene that touches every single one of the five senses without seeming like too much of an info-dump, that's talented writing right there.

Alternatively, a good way to get the reader into the head of a character is using a surprising choice of sense to describe something: tasting sweet blue, smelling the chill cold, touching his tangled thoughts, hearing the loud decor...

Try and use all the different senses to present the same idea, and see what you get out of it.

Lawl, third week and I'm already late. ~~THREE DOUBLE SHIFTS IN A ROW; REALLY, LIFE?~~

Anyway!

So. Characterization. There's so, so, so VERY much that surrounds that topic that I can't even put a dent in it here, so, I'm going to pick a slightly narrower sub-topic.

It's always good to think outside the box, and give your characters tiny quirks and habits that surprise the reader and keep them interested. For example, say you have a very no-nonsense businessman who dresses very snappy, is very clean and collected and kind of a hardass around the workplace. Then you follow him home and find out he's a single father who spends his nights helping his little girl color with crayons and had to learn baking to keep the family fed. Another example: Say you have an alpha male, control-freak shapeshifting lion ... that loves apple pie and hates horses. Another: A high-class Asian warrior who claims to have been well-trained at hand-to-hand combat; later you find out what he meant was, he excels at fencing.

Adding little (or not-so-little) details like these can really flesh a character out and make him INTERESTING to the reader, because it'll throw them somewhat of a curveball, and then they want to read more, to find out how or why. If you break stereotype, or have a conventional character design and start breaking it apart, then you start to have an honest-to-god person that's moving through your book.

Don't ignore the side characters with this, either. It's great if your main character is fleshed out and unique and interesting, but they should not be the only interesting personality in the book. If Interesting has nothing but Uninteresting to interact with, then every scene is uninteresting by default. What makes your token gay Best Friend character unique? What is your main character's boss's family like? What does the main villain like to do on his days off?

ALTERNATIVELY, you don't want to make characters TOO interesting. By that I mean, you want to keep things believable. Go too far outside the box and you end up in WTF-ville with your characterizations in tatters. A sheltered 9-to-5 cubicle employee who's balding, a bit chubby, and has a full family to support probably doesn't know taijitsu and can't defeat a seasoned samurai in battle. A sweet teenage folk-singer from Mississippi probably doesn't go home and try to contact aliens on her days off.

There's a difference between "interesting" and "unbelievable." You'll have to teach yourself to tread that line, and how to make things work for unlikely aspects. But a good tip is: if it feels wrong to you, it probably feels much worse to the reader.

With that in mind, our prompt this week is a great example of THIS FEELS WRONG. Do whatever you want with it.

Weekly Writing Exercise, Week 2

Yeah, here's another one :o To note: You don't have to think too hard on answering these. It's supposed to be a quick exercise to make you think, and stretch your creative muscles a little bit. Shouldn't take you too long to flesh a quick idea out.

Should I offer banners or something for participants? I don't want to make this into a contest, but ... ionno. Let's see how this week goes.

Anyway, does anyone else ever have trouble fleshing out certain characters? Like perhaps you have a certain idea in you head of how he should go, but it just doesn't work out on paper?

Lilith Saintcrow has a very interesting article that can help writers overcome roadblocks like these-- namely, observation, and how to do this in real life "un-obnoxiously."

We want to watch people interact in real life situations, because this is how we can make our storybook characters all the more real. But a lot of us live in a society where a wrong look can be easily misinterpreted, and it's polite to keep to oneself. So how can we watch people without being obnoxious?

I get a lot of my inspiration from the people around me. When I'm smart, I'll remember to write stuff down-- a certain quote from a friend, an event, a particular reaction I've observed. Unfortunately, I'm also an internet h0r and don't do well in most social situations. I wouldn't call myself socially retarded, but I have definite challenges.

Lilith mentions a lot of good points: things like where to go (malls, restaurants, public places), what to do (sit out of the way, have something in your hands, look occupied), what not to do (don't stare, don't be in the way)... a lot of this stuff may seem like no-brainer advice but really, its hard to find a place to get comfortable and be able to just sit and listen for awhile. But it's a good idea to do so when you the time-- being able to silently observe basic human interaction is, I think, a very important part of being able to write about it.

Anyway, if you have time, I'd recommend reading this, if only to get a few ideas :o

So I'll try to have these done every Wed or Tues night, because that tends to be the only guaranteed time I'll have to do it. >_> Y'all have the whole week to respond, though.

So here's the deal for our first-time readers: I'm going to give a prompt, whether in the form of a picture, a color, a quote, or anything, and you're going to write whatever you're inspired to write-- under 300 words. You make up the genre, the Point of View, the setting, the writing style-- original or fanfiction, its all you. Besides the prompt, there will be no other guidelines for submissions. Comment on this entry with your piece, and you'll be opening it up to review and constructive criticism (unless the comment is marked "Positive Only"(See below)) by anyone else that wants to play.

ANYONE can respond. ANYONE can comment on and/or review the responses. I'm making this entry public, so feel free to invite friends to participate and/or review your stuff.

I'm trying my hardest to keep this as freestyle as possible, especially since we're all friends here and I know we all know how to be civil with each other. So there will be no long list of rules, but below are listed a couple guidelines to help everyone out:

Guidelines:
1)Keep it under 300 words, please. I'm not going to police every comment with a measuring tape, but the whole point of this exercise is to keep it short and sweet, so it doesn't take up too much time to write or to review. (Here's a free online word counter)

2)TITLE your comments with either "Open," if you would like any type of criticism on your piece, or "Positive-Only," if you want the reviews to only focus on the positive aspects.

3)Similarly, if a comment is marked "Positive Only," that means leave ONLY positive comments. If something about their entry bugged you, let it go and only focus on what you did like about it. If you can't find anything you liked, don't comment.

4)Please give constructive criticism only. What is Constructive Criticism?
Good example: "I think you need to rework this part in order to get your point across. At the moment, the set-up is confusing because of (X), and (Y) is not being explained fully."
Bad Example: "The whole thing just sucked, and your (X) is terribly confusing. You should just scrap the whole thing. Also, ur retard."

iPod Drama

I had a little drama and a wonderful reunion with an old friend today, affectionately called my ancient iPod. For the long version of the story, click the cut. Short version is courtesy of mah sissy.

Teh Short:
iPod: Hey man, what's up?
iTunes: Hey.... Do I know you?
iPod: Yeah man I've just been y'know, LOCKED AWAY AND FORGOTTEN IN A DRAWER OF DESPAIR FOR LIKE TWO YEARS.
iTunes: That's harsh bro.
iPod: I know. So I've been a little emo since then.
iTunes: I feel ya man.
iPod: I suppose anyone would.
iTunes: No man I feel you. We're like connected now.
iPod: No shit?
iTunes: No shit.
iPod: Wow. Maybe I won't be such a dick to my neglectful owner now.
iTunes: Word.

Teh Long:
Sooooo I have this nice little 20G iPod that hasn't worked for about a year now. It'll be three years old next Christmas.

It's rather old for an iPod and I had sort've given up on it. It's been in a drawer for the better part of two years. I took it to college with me next year hoping to fix it/mess around with it and never got around to it.

I never got a new one because I'm rather affectionate of the little black one I have. I didn't get to use it enough when I could've and now that I have a car I bought a stereo for it that works with mp3 players and always meant to use my iPod with it.

But it was old. Frail. Tired in it's elderly days. I would plug it into my computer and it would keep sleeping and my computer wouldn't recognize it. iTunes would remain blissfully unaware.

Tonight Wicky-chan and I happened to be talking about iPods and I randomly decided to bring mine out. I plugged it into my comp and it happily kept snoring.

Wicky then suggested I threaten it. Apparently she has threatened hers (named Rufus) that she would upgrade to a Sephiroth if it didn't behave.

No sooner had she typed the word Sephiroth than I nearly jumped out of my seat at a sudden beeping near my hand.

I looked down at my iPod. It sounded like an alarm clock going off. Then the screen read, "Do not Disconnect. Connecting with computer..."

I stared in disbelief only to have my computer beep a moment later. "Found new Hardware!" It informed me happily. "Ipod!" These were words I had not seen in years, words I thought would never again grace my eyes.

I squeed with joy and disbelief and was about to get up and dance when...

iPod fell back asleep.

"Lost hardware during installation," My computer told me solemnly.

My hopes dashed, my head met my keyboard and I wept at the irony.

Wicky-chan pointed out that the iPod was probably just being emo. I explained that it had been in hibernation for a long time, snug in it's little leather cover, and simply would take some time waking up. Wicky informed me that no, it was just sulking because I had neglected it in a drawer for so long.

Not to be discouraged, I waited. After a few moments Wicky helpfully typed "SEPHIROTH! SEPHIROTH!" for display on my screen again.

iPod groggily cracked an eye open and my computer chimed to tell me it had found hardware again.

Holding my breath and crossing my fingers, I was pleasantly surprised when iTunes popped up in an exhuberant manner and asked if I would like to update my iPod now.

I looked for the "HELL YES WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU WAITING FOR" button, but had to settle for the "Continue" button instead.

It started loading. Glory Hallelujah, my iPod was back from the dead!

I could tell it was rather sleepy and groggy and very unhappy with me, and it fell back asleep again about halfway through the loading. (I had two years of songs for it to catch up on.) This time though, it yawned and told me it needed to be charged before it would stay awake for a longer amount of time.

iPod is now plugged into my wall and snuggled in it's recharging slumber and I hopefully await the results. Here's hoping it doesn't hate me~

Okay so... I seriously need help.

With my homework.

I need a topid for a paper. I've been researching and mooshing my brain trying to find something but I got nada.

We have to pick a paper topic for my history class and I'm absolutely clueless. The topic has to be something debateable-- I.E. there's evidence for both sides of the discussion-- and it has to be between 1750 and 1917.

The guidelines are to pick a topic which "identifies a specific region and/or culture which either engaged in or experienced colonial control or influence."

We then have to answer one of five questions:

1) Why did (or did not) the colonized culture adopt particular Enlightenment ideas?
2) How did the non-indigenous presence transform or alter the indigenous culture's relationship with it's natural environment?
3) How did the introduction of non-indigenous values or ideas have an impact on the indigenous people's relationship with its own traditions?
4) How did the introduction of new technology impact the relationship of the indigenous people to the governing group?
5) How did the colonial or imperialist experience cause the colonizing/imperialist country to reconsider itself as an "enlightened civilization?"

Originally, my topic was going to be on the American Colonies and Britain-- how they adopted enlightenment ideas to explain why it was their right to break away from Britain. The debate was going to be over whether they used these englightenment ideas as merely excuses so they could get what they wanted or if it was a true revolution and built on solid beliefs.

Then I found out WE CAN'T USE AMERICA AT ALL.

Stupid liberalist bastards. -.-

So now I've been looking through other parts of the world and while I can find other colonies just fine, it's hard finding a debate topic for them. I'd love to do Ghandi but he doesn't fit the required time period. Britain and Australia caught my interest but I couldn't find anything Scholars were debating about with that history and plus I didn't know how to tie in enlightenment ideas. Then I thought England and India-- maybe something to do with the Indian Mutiny??-- but again, I can't find something to seriously debate. Also it's hard to tie in Enlightenment in India during that time period.

So. *whimper.* Help me. Please.

Okay. I was feeling particularly dorky the other day when I found my little camcorder. I haven't used it in like a year, and I was itching to make something.

Along comes my copy of Kingdom Hearts II.

Along comes the thought that I had been wanting to document Roxas and Axel's story... and, after all, here was a way I could. So did I?

OH YES I DID.

Yay! I finally had time to make some more icons... I'm starting to get the hang of brushes and such now. ^_^ Happy me! Anyway, I obviously still need more practice, but these are some I've done recently.

Short update. Here is the compressed version of the Heero icon which LJ should accept-- Shorter, smaller and crappier. Argh. Gave me enough trouble...

More addiction to Photoshop. Dear Gods, why did I not listen to anyone? And might I mention that the animation shop takes so much more time and yet I still can't tear myself away.

Anyway, new crappy icons. Nothing really artistic 'cause I'm still practicing. Rose should be happy that I'm changing my Zechs icon though. :)

Icon Addiction

I'm starting in on icons now... PS7 is way too addicting. I have homework, damnit! But I discovered a site with GW cels and ever since have had way too much inspiration. So far I'm just doing simplistic icons and experimenting with animation a bit; I'll get more artistic later.

For now, a preview LJ icon. ^_^ Hope you laugh. This is mostly for Rose and wicked, in defense of Zechs!
